Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive type of dementia that destroys memory, behavior and thinking. The disease causes brain cells to degenerate and die, resulting in a steady decline in memory, intellectual and social skills. As brain cells die, the brain also shrinks.
The prevailing theory has been a build-up of amyloid plaque. Medications that have targeted that theory have essentially failed to produce any significant effect.
A new theory has emerged as to the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s. Research from Harvard has shown that as you age your mitochondria tend to malfunction. The DNA in aging mitochondria is harmfully altered by mutations, and the mitochondria produce destructive free radicals whose oxidative activity destroys neurons.
Strategies targeting inflammation, oxidative stress and impaired glucose uptake (the food for the brain) are producing the greatest possibilities for halting the progression and even reversing the symptoms.
Hemp Extract has shown to possess neuroprotective, anti- inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in vitro. These properties suggest that the compound could be therapeutically beneficial for reducing or even inhibiting the cognitive and functional impairment that occurs with Alzheimer’s disease.
The CB2 cannabinoid found in Hemp Extract can down-regulate expression by pro-inflammatory cytokines-associated transcription factors, alleviate inflammation of neurons, and promote protection of the neurons.
Hemp Extract stimulates CB2 receptors in the immune cells in the brain. This results in a decreased inflammatory response. So long- term use of Hemp Extract would decrease the extent of damage caused by the inflammation.
Findings* also indicate that Hemp Extract promotes neurogenesis, or the growth and development of new brain cells. This is a really exciting discovery. Creating new brain cells helps to reduce the deterioration of cognitive functions. In addition, it improves psychomotor agitation, aggression and communication.
While it requires a multi-pronged approach, which includes diet, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation, Hemp Extract is certainly proving to be a significant piece of this challenging puzzle.
